The chances of anything coming from Mars
Are a million to one, he said
The chances of anything coming from Mars
Are a million to one...
But still, they come!
This piece started out as a design for one of April 2024’s Patreon Rewards before I decided to go with a look closer to the original book illustrations. However, I kept the sketch around and eventually decided to continue working on it on my own free time, refining it as I saw fit.

-2001
-overnight more Martian capsules landed, and more of the fighting machines had arrived on earth. The photo depicted here shows the Martian machines as they advance through the country side, terrorising a local town.
-Eyewitnesses Report: Officer Tom Fraser:
:”They just surpassed all our defences with such ease, not so much as taking a dent. I hid in a building for so long, in a small cubby hole in the basement as their search lights swept over head. The screams, I heard the screams of my family’s and friends as those machines walked over head, whisking them away or blasting them into ash. My neighbour, Fritz, I’m certain one of those machines stepped on him as his cries were cut abruptly.”
:End report:
(The base photo isn’t mine and i just found it online. Credit to whoever took it who wasn’t me)

Landes Stilt-walkers and the Fighting-Machines
So, I remembered that description of 'boilers on stilts' for the fighting-machines, I got curious to see just what kind of stilts were available at that time. And during my little search on google, which I saw those quite tall ones, but then I saw one that particularly caught my eye: One with a cane which was resting, which made it superficially resembled a tripod.
I looked even further and found out that these belonged to the stilt-walking shepherds of the Landes, which got particularly marshy after rainfall.
It's a little cool tidbit which may or may not have inspired the fighting-machines, or at the very least a part of them. It seems fitting that the fighting-machines were partially inspired by shepherds, much like how they gather, slaughter, or even feed off of the population of london. Stepping through the 'red swamps' which the red weed formed by blocking the river thames and flooding several parts of london.
But it's just unproven speculation on my end, since wells has been dead for 78 years. But it's an interesting thought nonetheless

Here's a picture I found of 'em, taken in 1938 I believe

And here was the one that caught my eye, the one in to the left specifically :-)

Idk man, I might just keep this series Tumblr exclusive. Anyway here is a new and improved version of the War of the Worlds thing I made a while ago. Honestly I haven't really started on the King Kong thing because I've been focusing more on my other blog.

No one would have believed
In the last years of the 19th century...That human affairs were being watched from the timeless worlds of space...No one could have dreamed that we were being scrutinized..As someone with a microscope studies creatures that swarm and multiply in a drop of water...Few people even considered the possibility of life on other planets...And yet, across the gulf of space..Minds immeasurably superior to ours...Regarded this Earth with envious eyes...
And slowly...and surely, they drew their plans against us...

Boi! It feels great to post again ^u^
This is my take on the iconic Martian Fighting Machine [known colloquially by the fandom and by characters of the book as The Tripod] from H.G. Wells' scifi epic War Of The Worlds.
Now I'm sure you're well aware of this classic tale and must be familiarized by either the book or it's plethora of adaptations outside of the pages and first person narratives--from the radio drama narrated and performed by Orson Wells, the 1950s colored feature by George Pal with its iconic manta-warships, to Steven Spielberg's 21st century take on the story with twists here and there that make it unique and by far the most well known by our contemporary standards, to the comics like Scarlet Traces and so on and so forth.
And yet--most versions with few exceptions ever depict the iconic Tripods as how H.G. Wells originally described them or envisioned as these Biomechanical "tools" of extermination who are just as mysterious as their operators.
For this take of mine I took various sources of inspiration--from the work of Makoto Kobayashi and Moebius' work in how they depict their machines to the most important one being Henrique Alvim Corrêa's take on the Tripods for the French edition of WOTWs [one that allegedly H.G.Wells considers to be his favorite]; in case you're wondering where the
👁️ big 'ol eyes 👁️
and overall shape of the Tripod comes from.
I hope you guys liked this as much as I did--I really got to "to go town" with those Alcohol-based markers my sister got [we got two now! Neutral and Warm palette sets--the latter of which I used in the coloring of this drawing] plus it's my first time utilizing Photoshop in conjunction with Ibis Paint X to hopefully get the look I wanted.

Hello again....Do you mind if I ask your top 5 (or top 10) favorite moments from any media that you love (can books, anime/manga, tv series, movies, games, etc)? Thanks if you want to answer. Sorry if I ask too much or if I accidentally send this ask twice.....
Sorry I left this in my inbox for a bit. Honestly, I really struggle with top anything media, because I hop to one thing from another pretty fast. Even things I really enjoyed lately I wouldn't say would be top of all time, you know? It's much easier for me to do a top 5/10 of something specific. (I could do a top 5 80s horror easily, lmao)
But here's a few:
1.) The end kiss from the Princess Bride.
Hey, the narration says it all: since the invention of the kiss, there have been five that are deemed the most beautiful, the most pure, and this one blew them all away.
Tumblr media
2.) The apartment scene from The Crow (1991). It's a quiet and sensitive moment of Eric mourning Shelly and you see the man behind the persona. (I like it so much I've cross-stitched it!) Underlined by Eric saying "I thought I'd use the front door" (to leave, instead of disappearing) in that defeated way - it's a short scene that shows how much grief he's carrying.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
3.) The plot twist in Saw (2004)
I'm not including a gif or talking about it because if you don't know the twist, it's such a good reveal. Tbh anytime the Hello Zepp theme plays I get very excited, though the quality of twists vary hugely. (I wouldn't say the end of Saw X was a twist, but very fun to watch!)
4.) "We saw Tri-pods wading up the Thames, cutting through bridges as though they were paper. Waterloo bridge, Westminster bridge - one appeared above Big Ben."
From War of the Worlds (The Jeff Wayne musical version but the book too). Gives me goosebumps every time! The Definitive Alien Invasion story, with just the poignant imagery.
(I can't find a good image, though! This is the best I can do!)
Tumblr media
5.) David finds the Blue Fairy from A.I: Artifical Intelligence (2001)
Major Spoilers! David is a robot, given to a family who's son is in a coma. When the son wakes, he tells David he's not a real boy. Taking the story of Pinocchio literally, David tries to find the Blue Fairy, who'll turn him into a real boy (and then his parents will truly accept him.)
Only...the Blue Fairy is a statue...
The pathos. The dramatic irony. Haley Joel Osment acting his heart out. This scene had me inconsolable.

Inktober 52 2023 - Week 38 - 'Harvest'
@scifer and I saw the 'Jeff Wayne's The War of The Worlds' immersive experience recently in London (Christmas present from my ma form last year!) which was a real blast. The VR was a little ropey in places, but it was still a lot of fun and the actors and set pieces were bloody amazing. I always loved the rock opera and the experience was an excellent version of it.

Anyway to the horror! Have a Martian machine harvesting some humans whilst it's red weed grows on the earth around! 8D
